Pakistani actor Zara Noor Abbas has spoken up about the fear many parents in the country are feeling right now. In a story shared on her Instagram, she asked how a mother is supposed to keep her children safe in what she called “the worst times.”
She said things are bad not because such crimes are rare, but because no real example is being made out of them, since they happen so often and so easily. She added that these crimes now seem so easy to commit that the issue is no longer limited to one gender.
Abbas questioned whether people should be allowed to take the law into their own hands, saying the justice system “does seem to behave like a sixth grader.” She appeared to reference the case of businessman Mir Raza Ali, whose body was exhumed for a second autopsy after a court order, and which showed he had been shot and tortured, unlike the initial suicide theory.
She also criticized the idea that a 17-year-old suspect in a child’s rape and murder case in Karachi should get counselling instead of harsher punishment, simply because of his age.
Abbas is one of several celebrities reacting to two disturbing cases that have shaken Karachi recently, the death of Mir Raza Ali, and the rape and murder of a young girl in Qayyumabad, after which a teenage relative was arrested as the main suspect.
Her post reflects growing public frustration over child safety and how such cases are handled by the justice system.
