New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made headlines on Wednesday, May 27, when he showed up to Eid ul Adha prayers wearing a custom-made thobe inspired by Arsenal’s 2025/26 away kit, and the internet went wild.
The 34-year-old mayor, who is New York City’s first Muslim mayor, joined thousands of worshippers at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx, just outside Yankee Stadium. The event drew nearly 2,000 families from the local Muslim community. US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was also present at the gathering.

Mamdani’s outfit was a traditional thobe tailored from Arsenal’s deep navy away kit, complete with red chevron detailing, the “Emirates Fly Better” sponsor logo, and “Visit Rwanda” branding on the sleeves. The garment was custom-made by Jason Andrew, co-founder of the Brooklyn Invincibles, an Arsenal supporters group based in New York.
The timing made the moment even more special. Arsenal had just ended their 22-year wait for a Premier League title, and Mamdani, a lifelong Gunners fan since age 10, was clearly in the mood to celebrate. The viral photo of him greeting worshippers has since been viewed over a million times online.
In his Eid message, Mamdani tied the spirit of sacrifice to his role as mayor, saying the holiday is a reminder to serve those most in need. “Sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger,” he said.
