Millions Trust CeraVe Daily But Lawsuits Say Their Acne Products May Contain a Cancer-Linked Chemical

CeraVe, one of the most trusted skincare brands in the world, is now at the center of a major legal storm, and millions of everyday users are paying attention.

The brand and its parent company, L’Oréal, are facing at least six class-action lawsuits after an independent laboratory report by Valisure alleged that products, including the CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, are inherently unstable.

The core concern? When these benzoyl peroxide-based products are exposed to high temperatures, even as common as body temperature or a warm bathroom, the active ingredient can break down and form benzene at levels hundreds of times above the FDA’s conditional limit of 2 parts per million.

Testing by Valisure found benzene levels in CeraVe cleansers ranging from 5 ppm to more than 12 ppm, well beyond what federal guidelines allow.

The lawsuits allege that L’Oréal “knew or should have known” its products were at risk, since benzoyl peroxide decomposition has long been documented in scientific literature. Plaintiffs claim the company made no reasonable effort to test for benzene or warn consumers.

Benzene exposure is known to increase the risk of several serious cancers, including multiple forms of leukemia, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and Aplastic Anemia.

Valisure has petitioned the FDA to recall the affected products, but the regulator has yet to respond. The cases are currently ongoing in U.S. federal courts.
