A high-quality bootleg copy of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” spread rapidly across X on the film’s opening weekend, reaching nearly six million accounts before being removed. According to reports, an account named Fredrick Bryan posted the leaked video at around 6:05 a.m. PT, and it remained online for hours, garnering more than 143,000 likes and around 10,000 reshares before being taken down. In total, the bootleg remained available for viewing on the platform for about nine hours before X’s moderation team pulled it down.
Several other accounts also tried to share copies of the footage, but these were quickly removed as copyright enforcement continued. Sony, the studio behind the film, did not comment on the situation. Frustrated viewers took to social media to complain when their illegal streams got cut off, with some joking about watching “halfway through” before the video stopped playing.
This isn’t an isolated case. Just a week earlier, a high-quality bootleg of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” also leaked on X and garnered millions of views before Universal took down the content. Since X added a Premium subscription that removed video length limits, it has become far easier for users to upload entire feature films illegally, a growing headache for studios trying to protect new releases.
Despite the leak, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is thriving in theaters. The film earned $72 million from preview screenings alone, breaking the previous preview record of $60 million set by “Avengers: Endgame.” It also posted the biggest opening day in box office history, beating “Avengers: Endgame’s” previous record. The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Jacob Batalon.
