“There’s a Bitter Feeling”: Vikrant Massey on Casting Directors

Indian actor Vikrant Massey recently opened up about his journey in the film industry, sharing honest thoughts on auditions, casting professionals, and how he learned to handle rejection.

Speaking at an event, the 12th Fail star made a bold claim about casting directors and assistants, saying many of them are actors who didn’t fully succeed in their own acting careers. He clarified that “failed” wasn’t the right word, and that many of them simply hadn’t been able to recognise or realise their full potential as performers.

Massey explained that while many casting professionals take up the job simply to support their families, some bring frustration into the audition room. He said casting assistants often try to direct actors during auditions, instructing them to perform in a certain way, even when the actor is already well prepared. Because of this, Massey said he eventually started requesting that directors themselves sit in on his auditions instead of relying on casting assistants.

The actor also looked back on his early career, revealing that he began working at just 16 years old, juggling two jobs alongside his studies. It was during this time that a television producer noticed him and gave him his first acting break.

Reflecting on the many rejections he faced along the way, Massey said they ultimately made him a better performer, even when it was hard not to question his own abilities after being turned down.

Massey is currently preparing for an upcoming biographical film about spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. He was last seen in the romantic drama Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan alongside Shanaya Kapoor.
