Arshad Warsi Under Fire After Calling Pakistani Jokes Derogatory

Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi has landed in hot water after saying he does not enjoy Pakistani humor, calling it insulting and derogatory.

Speaking with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, Warsi said he was not a fan of Pakistani comedy because it often involves name-calling and feels insulting. He also said he does not like sexual comedy, even though many people enjoy it.

Hirani disagreed, saying comedy naturally touches on cultural identities. He gave examples of jokes about Sindhis, Sardarjis, and even Polish people, saying that if everything is filtered out, humor itself would disappear. Warsi then agreed, saying people should “lighten up.”

The comments did not go down well with Pakistani social media users, who pushed back strongly online. Many argued that Indian comedy shows are far more offensive than Pakistani humor. Some pointed to Kapil Sharma’s show and the controversial “India’s Got Latent,” which was shut down for a year over inappropriate content.

Others said Pakistani humor actually influenced Bollywood comedy, naming actors like Govinda, Paresh Rawal, and Johnny Lever, who borrowed from Pakistani comedian Umer Sharif’s style. Several users also took a dig at Warsi’s acting career, calling his solo hero films unsuccessful and saying they preferred watching British humor instead of Indian comedy.

The exchange has sparked a wider debate online about which country’s comedy culture is more respectful.
