Russia has held its first-ever symbolic wedding ceremony for humanoid robots, giving the world a strange new glimpse into the future of robotics and artificial intelligence.
The event took place on July 9 at the Pushkin Library in Moscow. Two humanoid robots, named Robert and Matilda, exchanged vows and wedding bracelets during the ceremony, which was led by a human host. Instead of rings, the robots swapped bracelets, and in a fun twist, a robotic dog carried the bracelets to the ceremony.
Robert was designed to look like an office worker and blogger, while Matilda was modeled after a ballerina. Both robots had already been shown to the public earlier this year at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. During the wedding, the two exchanged vows using dialogue created by artificial intelligence, and were officially declared “robot husband and wife” by the ceremony’s host.
It’s important to note that this was not a real, legally binding marriage. The event was designed purely as a public demonstration to show off how far humanoid robots and AI have advanced, rather than to suggest robots can actually marry or live human-like lives.
