Pakistan’s Sanam Saeed Makes Cannes Debut Carrying the Legacy of a Legend

Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed is set to make her debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2026, marking a major milestone for Pakistan’s entertainment industry on the global stage.

But Sanam is not just walking the red carpet for herself. She has said she will carry forward the legacy of legendary Pakistani artist Begum Shamim Ara at the festival, expressing pride in representing Pakistan on an international stage.

Sanam’s participation goes beyond red carpet appearances, as she has been named one of the inaugural honorees of Us Studios’ “South Asian Women Excellence in Cinema & Global Art” initiative, aimed at recognising the contributions of women in cinema and creative arts across South Asia.

In a video posted on her Instagram, Sanam said Shamim Ara’s life “was something rare — rise, dominance, reinvention, legacy.” She also highlighted how the veteran star “quietly broke the biggest boundaries, opening doors for women behind the camera” in a male-dominated industry.

At Cannes, Sanam wore a custom blue ensemble by Pakistani designer Hussain Rehar, who was also in attendance at the film festival.

The announcement sparked excitement across the Pakistani showbiz fraternity, with Mahira Khan expressing pride and support, while Maya Ali appreciated Sanam’s decision to honour Shamim Ara on such a prestigious global platform.
