KitKat has taken its famous “Have a Break” slogan to a completely new level. KitKat Panama, in collaboration with creative agency Ogilvy Colombia, has created a product called “Break Mode”, an oversized KitKat wrapper that is actually a Faraday cage, a conductive enclosure designed to block electromagnetic fields.
The concept is simple but clever. Once you put your phone into the empty packaging, all signals, calls, 4G/5G connectivity, Bluetooth, and GPS are entirely blocked, turning your world offline and analog, at least until you take your phone out again.
The technology behind it is more advanced than it looks. The copper layer is the primary conductive material, while polyester layers give it structural integrity. The polypropylene outer coating provides durability, and a precision-engineered sealing mechanism ensures that signals are truly blocked.
Ogilvy tested it under rigorous conditions, including RF signal attenuation, cellular signal strength, and electromagnetic isolation checks, confirming 100% effectiveness.
There is also an eco-conscious angle. The packaging has a lifespan of around one year, and its materials can be carefully sorted for responsible recycling.
KitKat’s marketing director at Nestlé Central America said: “Break Mode goes beyond simply saying ‘Have a Break’, it empowers individuals with the physical tool to genuinely achieve it.”
The special edition was distributed at events in Panama, including technology fairs, concerts, and university campuses. Whether it reaches global markets remains to be seen, but it has already started a much-needed conversation about truly unplugging.
