Federal Government Rejects Sitara-e-Imtiaz Nominations for Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa

Two of Pakistan’s most well-known actors, Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa, were nominated for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of the country’s top civil awards, but their names were turned down by the federal government. This was revealed by Sindh’s Culture and Tourism Minister, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah.

Speaking at the opening of the eight-day Wes-Dhaari Sindhi Theatre Festival 2026 in Karachi, the minister said the Sindh Culture Department had sent the names of both actors for the award not once, but twice. He explained that a committee made up of respected and well-known personalities had prepared these recommendations, believing both stars deserved national recognition for their work in the entertainment industry.

However, according to Shah, both attempts were rejected by the federal government, and no reason was ever given for the decision. The minister said this lack of explanation was disappointing, especially since both actors have contributed significantly to Pakistan’s film and television industry over the years.

Shah used the opportunity to appeal to the federal government, asking them to pay more attention to artists and the wider cultural sector. He said performers from Sindh have brought honor to Pakistan on national and international platforms and deserve to be properly recognized at the federal level.

The statement has sparked conversation online, with many fans expressing support for the two actors, while some social media users shared mixed opinions about whether they should receive the award at all.
