Pakistan’s popular period drama Aangan is set to return to television nearly eight years after it first aired, according to a short teaser shared on Instagram by its original broadcaster. The clip did not reveal a premiere date or details about the new instalment, but it has already revived interest in one of the country’s most talked-about historical dramas.
Aangan first aired from December 2018 to June 2019 and was based on Khadija Mastoor’s well-known 1962 Urdu novel of the same name. Mustafa Afridi wrote the television adaptation, while Mohammed Ehteshamuddin directed it. The story is set in the years surrounding the Partition of the subcontinent and follows a family whose personal relationships become entangled with the political upheaval of the time.
The original cast included several actors who were already popular or went on to become major stars. Mawra Hocane played Aaliya, the character through whose eyes much of the story unfolds. Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir played Chammi and Jameel, a couple at the centre of the drama’s romantic storyline. Ahsan Khan took on two separate roles, Subhan and Safdar.
The wider cast featured Hira Mani, Sonya Hussaiyn, veteran actor Abid Ali, Zaib Rehman, Omair Rana, Madiha Rizvi, Shehroz Sabzwari, Rabia Butt, Uzma Baig and Hassan Noman. The show was praised at the time for its detailed period sets, costumes and its wide-ranging portrayal of family life before independence.
