Pakistan Remembers Amjad Sabri on His 10th Death Anniversary

Pakistan is paying tribute to legendary qawwal Amjad Sabri on his 10th death anniversary today. Admirers across Pakistan and abroad are remembering his immense contribution to Sufi music and devotional poetry.

Born on 23 December 1976, Amjad Sabri belonged to the renowned Sabri family, which played a big role in making qawwali popular around the world. He began performing on stage with his father at just 12 years old and quickly became known for his powerful voice and spiritual style of singing. He was the son of Ghulam Farid Sabri and the nephew of Maqbool Ahmed Sabri, both members of the famous Sabri Brothers. Over time, he became one of South Asia’s most loved qawwali singers, performing not just in Pakistan but also in the UK and the US.

His famous songs, including “Tajdar-e-Haram” and “Bhar Do Jholi,” still inspire millions of listeners and remain close to fans’ hearts. In recognition of his work, he received the Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz awards.

Sabri was tragically shot on June 22, 2016, during Ramazan. Unidentified gunmen opened fire near his home in Liaquatabad, Karachi, and he died from his injuries. A military court later sentenced two Lashkar-i-Jhangvi militants to death for their role in the murder.

His legacy now continues through his son, Mujadid Amjad Sabri, who is following in his father’s footsteps and impressing audiences with strong performances worldwide. Every year on this day, fans, family, and fellow artists gather to remember the qawwal whose voice still echoes in shrines and homes across the country.
