A recent episode of Rise & Shine has stirred debate online after comments by Nadia Khan and Ali Raza about the Lahori accent went viral. The actor appeared on the show with Zohaib Hassan, where a light conversation quickly turned into a wider discussion.
During the interview, Nadia Khan questioned Ali Raza’s “polished” Urdu. She pointed out that he belongs to Lahore, but his speech does not carry a strong Punjabi tone. The comment caught attention online, with many viewers focusing on how accents are often linked to identity.
Ali Raza responded without delay. He said he never had a typical Lahori accent and believes such tones come from specific environments. He explained that people may pick up a certain way of speaking depending on who they spend time with. He added that sitting with cart vendors may shape one kind of accent, while being around an educated circle can influence speech differently.
His response did not sit well with many social media users. A large number of people criticized the statement, saying that accent has nothing to do with education or literacy. Some felt the remarks sounded class-based and unfair.
The debate has since grown online, with users discussing language, class, and social attitudes. It shows how a short exchange on a morning show can quickly turn into a larger cultural conversation in Pakistan.
