Spider-Man: Brand New Day Scores $927 Million Global Opening, Second Biggest Ever

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has smashed box office records, earning $927 million worldwide in its opening weekend. This makes it the second most successful opening weekend for any film ever, both in North America and globally, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.

In the United States and Canada alone, the film brought in $355 million, while international markets added $572 million, with China leading the way at $121 million. According to data from Rentrak, this is the biggest domestic opening since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The movie is actor Tom Holland’s fourth time playing Spider-Man. This time, Peter Parker deals with a world that has forgotten he is Spider-Man, while also facing feelings of loneliness. Zendaya returns as MJ, Parker’s love interest.

Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman said the film connects with people because, at its heart, it’s a story about friendship and human connection. Entertainment researcher Greg Durkin added that the movie’s themes of isolation struck a chord with young viewers, especially Gen Z, who are dealing with what some call a mental health and friendship crisis.

Critics and audiences have both responded positively, with the film earning a 90 percent critic score and a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Analysts say the Spider-Man franchise is now nearing $10 billion in total worldwide earnings.

The film’s release also paired well with another hit, The Odyssey, creating what experts called the biggest domestic weekend in movie theatre history. Despite this summer’s strong performances, overall box office numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels.
