She Never Let Go: The Story of a Mother’s Final Act of Love in the Jabalpur Boat Tragedy

On the evening of May 1, 2025, a pleasure cruise on the Bargi Dam reservoir in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, turned into a nightmare. An MP Tourism cruise boat carrying around 40 to 45 passengers capsized nearly 300 metres from the embankment after being hit by a sudden storm, with strong winds of around 40 kmph and heavy rain causing the vessel to lose control and sink rapidly.

Among the passengers was a Delhi family of four: a father, mother, and two young children. While the father and daughter managed to survive the accident, the mother and son could not escape.

The woman, identified as Marina Massey, had come from Delhi with her family to visit Jabalpur. By Friday morning, rescuers recovered the bodies of Marina and her son, Trishan. Witnesses say she had wrapped him securely in her life jacket, holding him close till the very end.

The moment rescuers discovered them was unforgettable. A rescuer described how they initially tried to pull out the woman’s body from the wreckage of the sunken boat, but it would not move. On taking a closer look, they realised she was holding a child in her arms in what appeared to be a final effort to protect him.

Several survivors alleged that proper safety checks were not carried out before departure and that life jackets were either unavailable or handed out only after the boat began to sink.

The tragedy claimed nine lives in total. Marina’s story, however, has become a symbol of a mother’s unconditional love, one that held firm even when everything else was lost.
